Balancing Act

DIY: How to Install Interior LED Lighting Kit on a 3rd Generation Hyundai Tucson

Welcome to the first DIY guide for the Tucson! We will be installing an OEM interior LED lighting kit for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra, part #F3068A-DU00 on a 2019 Hyundai Tucson Limited.

I decided to use an interior lighting kit designed for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra solely because of cost savings. The 3rd generation Hyundai Tucson interior lighting kit part # is D3068-ADU00 and retails for $225. If you search around online, you can find them for $160 ~ $170.

The same kit for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra costs about the same, but they can be had for as low as $79.00 brand new in box. That’s how much I got mines for from an automotive surplus supplier. Before acquiring the Elantra kit, I thoroughly read the installation instructions for both Tucson and Elantra interior LED lighting kits. I concluded that they use practically the same parts, down to the wire harness, with minor and mainly cosmetic differences. With some tinkering, I got the Elantra kit to work in our 2019 Tucson Limited following the installation instruction for the Tucson kit. Here’s how to do it.

Tools and Materials

Main Differences Between Tucson and Elantra Kits

The main differences between the Elantra and Tucson kits are the Elantra’s driver side LED is pre-attached to a metal bracket with removable plastic push fasteners and cosmetic difference on the main wire harness.

The Tucson kit comes with two individual LED light boards and fasteners to secure them onto the center driver and passenger side kick panels.

The main wire harness is a little cosmetically different, otherwise it is functionally identical. Everything else in the kit is identical.

Main Installation Guide

This guide works for both 6th generation Elantra and 3rd generation Tucson interior LED lighting kit.

Step 1

If you acquired an Elantra kit, the first thing to do is to separate the driver side LED board from the metal bracket. If you are using a Tucson kit, skip this step.

To do this, simply push the black plastic push fasteners out of the metal bracket holding the LED board.

The LED board should separate easily with the plastic push pin intact. Discard the metal bracket.

Step 2

Remove the shift knob and shift booth by pulling the shift knob vertically.

You may have to use a little force to pull it off the shift lever. The knob and boot assembly should pop right off. Set aside.

Step 3

Next, remove the center console trim by disengaging the push clips at following locations, using a nylon trim pry tool.

The entire center trim lifts straight up, leave the wire connectors intact and set aside.

Step 4

Remove the forward tray by assembly by pulling the wireless charging pad upward and towards you. The two clips at the top corners of the tray should pop right off.

Pull the forward tray out towards you and maneuver it over the shift lever. Disconnect the wires and set aside.

Step 5

Download the following template, print it with default scaling and cut it out using a pair of scissors.

Using the “Switch Forward Tray” template, align it with the back of the forward tray.

Note that the trim cutout may not align directly, depending on the Tucson trim level but the hole where you drill (crosshair) is still the at the same location. Drill a 3/16″ pilot hole, followed by a 19/32″ final hole.

This hole is for the push button switch. I didn’t have a 19/32″ drill bit, so I used a step bit and drilled the pilot hole until it is just big enough to push the switch through it.

The step bit is also self deburring, saving me the need for a deburring tool set.

Push the switch into the hole you’ve just drilled and set aside.

Step 6

Next, remove the driver side center rear kick panel. To do this, gently pull at the circled areas to disengage the clips.

The panel should pull right off. Use a nylon trim removal tool if you are having problems.

Step 7

Remove the passenger side center rear kick panel in the same fashion as you removed the driver side panel.

Again, be extra careful at pulling on the clip areas as the plastic is very brittle and can snap easily.

Step 8

Apply the “LED lamp – Driver side center console” template onto the driver side panel and tape it.

Use a 3/16″ drill bit to drill the two upper holes while using a 3/8″ drill bit to drill the lower middle hole.

Step 9

Orient the driver side LED board with the connector facing downward.

The plastic push pins should still be in place. Push the plastic push pins with the LED board into the holes you just drilled on driver side panel.

Once the LED board is securely in place, trim 3 mm off the push pin located closest to the front.

Step 10

Repeat steps

Step 10

Place the Interior Light wire harness in the front area of the center console. Make sure that the wire does not interfere with the shift lock and shift lever.

Step 11

Route the driver side LED connection wire from the center console and into the driver side footwell.

Route the passenger side LED connection wire from the center console and into the passenger side footwell.

Step 12

Route the Interior Light Harness (Driver Side Label) Connector through
the 3/8″ hole opening and connect it to the LED Connector.

Secure the Interior Light Harness to the plastic heater pipe cover using
one wire tie as shown.

Reinstall the driver side panel.

Step 13

Connect the Interior Light Harness (Passenger Side Label) Connector
to the LED module.

Reinstall the Passenger Side Panel.

Step 14

Identify if the vehicle has either the 12 Pin or 16 Pin White Auxiliary Connector, then use the following 12 Pin or 16 Pin instructions to install the T-Tap Connectors. 12 Pin or 16 Pin White Auxiliary Connector is located under the center console trim panel. For the 2019 Tucson Limited, we are working with a 12 Pin connector:

Step 15

12 Pin White Auxiliary Connector Instructions:

  • Connect one (1) T-Tap to the Red / Orange Wire at Pin 4 of the 12 Pin White Aux Connector.
  • Connect one (1) T-Tap to the Blue / Orange Wire at Pin 6 of the 12 Pin White Aux Connector.
  • Connect the Interior Light Harness White Wire to the T-Tap on the Red / Orange Wire (ILL+).
  • Connect the Interior Light Harness Grey w/Black Stripe Wire to the T-Tap on the Blue / Orange Wire (ILL-).

16 Pin White Auxiliary Connector Instructions:

Connect one (1) T-Tap to the Red / Orange Wire at Pin 8 of the 16 Pin White Aux Connector.

  • Connect one (1) T-Tap to the Blue / Orange Wire at Pin 10 of the 16 Pin White Aux Connector.
  • Connect the Interior Light Harness White Wire to the T-Tap on the Red / Orange Wire (ILL+).
  • Connect the Interior Light Harness Grey w/Black Stripe Wire to the T-Tap on the Blue / Orange Wire (ILL-).

Step 16

Use two wire ties to tie down the interior lighting harness to the center console crossmember. Use a third wire tie to tie the inter lighting harness to the USB/Audio/Navigation harness. Trim excess wire ties with a pair of scissors.

Step 17

Connect the Interior Light Harness Switch Connector to the ON / OFF Switch at the Forward Tray.

Reconnect all remaining electrical connectors to the forward tray. Reinstall the Forward Tray. Ensure the wire harness has no interference with shift lever or shift lock system.

Step 18

Reinstall the center console, shift boot and shift lever.

Step 19

Press the switch of the interior LED lighting kit to the ON position. Turn on your Tucson’s parking lights. The LED lighting should turn on. Turn on your Tucson’s headlights. The LED lighting should stay on.

Adjust the brightness of your gauge cluster. The LED lighting kit should dim or brighten along with the gauge cluster.
